AS 3.12 'Evaluating Reports' is a 4 credit externally assessed topic AS 91584

 Revision books would also be useful. This topic has been split into two sections: 1) Statistical Literacy & Report Writing This is completed at the start of the year as a foundation to the three internal standards. 2) Sampling, Surveys, Margins of Error & Critiquing Reports This is the final topic, biulding on concepts covered in the internal standards.

### Possible Lesson Sequence for AS 3.12 Evaluating Reports(AS 91584)

1. Introduction, Overview, pretest on statistical writing

2. Statistical Literacy
Five Lessons building statistical vocabulary, claim support & repeatability, causation & association, errors, words that imply without asserting, undefined amounts, frequency & likely, real statistics & speculation. Finding and critiquing articles in the media, peer review & sharing ideas.

3. Report Writing
Eight lessons covering: The difference between traditional 'maths' and statistical reporting. The introduction. Report paragraph sentence structure. The conclusion. Improving report writing skills from simple examples to complete reports. Peer critiquing, exemplars, and practice.

(A break to do the three internal standards which involve report writing)

4. Sampling & Surveys
Representation of a population, sampling & survey methods, validity & bias, summary & evaluate effectiveness of reports.

5. Margins of Error
The three rules of thumb, their origin and use. Are the report findings valid or not?

6. Critiquing Reports
Practice with a range of reports, critiquing. Exemplar assessments & revision. Practice AS3.12 class test.
